The Portuguese President Jorge Sampaio dissolved Portugal's parliament on Friday and set snap elections for Feb. 20.

The Portuguese President Jorge Sampaio dissolved Portugal's parliament on Friday and set snap elections for Feb. 20.

"Given the diversity of proposals that were presented to me, I will schedule elections for next Feb. 20," Sampaio said in a broadcast address.

Prime Minister Pedro Santana Lopes' Social Democratic Party are well behind the opposition Socialists in polls less than five months after taking office.
