Overpayments attributed to fraud in the social welfare system amounted to £11.6 million last year, involving 10,820 individuals, the House was told. There were over 500 staff involved in control of fraud and abuse. The total welfare budget amounted to £4.2 billion, the Minister, Mr De Rossa, told the Fianna Fail spokesman, Mr Joe Walsh, in a written reply.
