The Fianna Fail deputy leader, Ms Mary O'Rourke, urged action by the Government to settle the Civil Service dispute. It threatened chaos over a wide range of services, including school exams.

The Minister for Communications, Mr Lowry, said discussions were being held with union representatives with a view to resolving the disputes over numbers and pay.
