A Polish black pudding product has been recalled due to the presence of high levels of the Listeria bug.

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) said all batches of Sokolów Home Black Pudding Sausage and Grill Black Pudding Sausage were being recalled.

High levels of Listeria monocytogenes in the product were a health risk, the authority said.

It advised consumers to check if they have purchased these products and, if they had, not to eat them, but to return them to the point of purchase.

Ongoing investigations are being carried out by the Polish authorities to establish the source of the contamination. Production has stopped to allow a full clean-up of the production plant. The product was distributed to two wholesalers in Ireland who are removing the products from sale, the authority said.

"Listeria infection is very serious and can be life threatening. Specific segments of the population would be deemed to be of particular risk including pregnant women, elderly people and people with impaired immune functions."

Consumers with concerns should contact the FSAI advice line on 1890 336677.
