Suva - A policeman died of his wounds after being shot as a mob of supporters of coup leader George Speight surged through the Fijian capital Suva, police said early this morning.

The killing was the first in the crisis which erupted when Mr Speight took Prime Minister Mahendra Chaudhry and about 30 others hostage on May 19th. Hours earlier, Mr Speight had said he believed a resolution of the deadlock was close.
