A fire at a Cornwall hotel last summer that killed three people is being treated as murder, British police said today.

A fire at a Cornwall hotel last summer that killed three people is being treated as murder, British police said today.

Peter Hughes (43); his mother, Monica; and Joan Harper (80) were killed in the fire that destroyed the Penhallow Hotel in Newquay last August.

Det Chief Supt Chris Boarland said the fire had been the most serious hotel fire in the country for 30 years.

Newquay, a resort town on the north coast of Cornwall, is known as a surfing centre.
