DIJON - Riot police, carrying batons and using tear gas, stormed a French prison yesterday, ending a mutiny by approximately 300 inmates who refused to go back to their cells. Prison spokesman Francois Antonini said damage was "huge".

A loud explosion of unknown origin was heard from inside the prison a few minutes before two squads of riot police assembled outside.
