Police in Northern Ireland are appealing for information after a gang of men robbed a 77-year-old woman in her home.

Up to seven men claiming to police officers entered the house on Springfield Road last night at about 10.30pm. They demanded money and assaulted the woman's 43-year-old niece.

The men wore peaked caps and covered their faces. One of the gang, who is thought to be in his 30s, was described as about 1.77m (5ft 10in) in height, of large build with dark hair. The rest of the men are believed to be between 18 and 20 years of age.

Police in Antrim Road are asking anyone who was in the area last night and who may have witnessed anything to contact them.

SDLP West Belfast MLA Alex Attwood condemned the robbery.

"This is a very disturbing incident and reveals the depth that some people will go to pursue crime," he said.

"The severity of this crime cannot be diminished and the perpetrators must be dealt with and be put behind bars."
