A 23-year-old man has died in hospital after his car struck a tree following a police chase, it emerged today.

A 23-year-old man has died in hospital after his car struck a tree following a police chase, it emerged today.

Northern Ireland's Police Ombudsman is to investigate the incident which happened on the Culmore Road, outside Derry shortly before 4am yesterday.

The man, who was driving a Renault Megane, failed to stop for police and was being followed at the time of the crash.

He was critically injured and died today at the city's Altnagelvin Hospital.

A PSNI spokeswoman said: "The Police Ombudsman's Office is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding this incident therefore it would be inappropriate to comment any further."

The Police Ombudsman, Nuala O'Loan, heads an office which was set up in 2000 to provide an independent and impartial police complaints system.
