The man was shot in four times in the legs when three men forced their way into a flat on Glebe Avenue, in the Harbourstown area of the Co Derry town at about 11 p.m.

The victim was held down and shot three times in one leg and once in the other. The gunmen then escaped.

Elsewhere, a female shop assistant escaped injury when the pistol a robber aimed at her head jammed in a raid in Castlewellan, Co Down.

The raider held the gun to the woman’s face after she handed over the shop’s takings. A Police Serivce of Northern Ireland spokesman said the robber then pulled the trigger a number of times but it failed to fire.

The robber is described as being in his twenties and was wearing a navy anorak and navy tracksuit bottoms.
