Police in Northern Ireland are investigating an overnight assault in Newtownards which led to a man being hospitalised with serious injuries.

The incident took place in the Shackletown Walk area of the town at around 8.45pm.

An 18 year old man was pulled from a car by two men and assaulted with bats and hammers.

The victim sustained injuries to his arm and leg and was taken to hospital.

Police are working to establish a motive and would appeal to anyone who witnessed this attack or has information in relation to this incident to contact them on 0845 600 8000.
