Police in Derry were attacked with petrol bombs during street violence in the city last night.

Officers were targeted as they dealt with trouble in the Irish Street area, where youths were trying to block a road with a barricade.

With tensions running high in Derry ahead of this weekend's controversial Protestant Apprentice Boys parade, rival mobs pelted each other with bottles and bricks.

Two petrol bombs were thrown at a police Landrover, a PSNI spokesman said.

The patrol was also stoned before community representatives were called in to help restore calm. There were no reports of any injuries.

SDLP councillor Mr Gerard Diver condemned the street disturbances, saying they would only stoke up tensions in the run-up to this Saturday's Apprentice Boys parade.

"Rather than engaging in the blame game, everyone must work to do whatever they can to help stop this violence," he said.
