MINSK - Belarus police, banging truncheons menacingly against riot shields, clashed in Minsk yesterday with demonstrators protesting against a referendum next week in which President Alexander Lukashenko will seek to extend his term.

The demonstrators dispersed from the so called "March of Silence" after several hours.
