A nurse officer who was called urgently to a man at a facility for juvenile offenders who died of strychnine poisoning, had seen the same prisoner just 15 minutes earlier when he complained of feeling unwell, an inquest has heard.

Nurse officer Andrew Armstrong had put the man on 15-minute checks. When prison officer John Kavanagh went to check on the prisoner 15 minutes later, he found him on the floor.

Anthony Kelly (20), Darndale, Dublin, was taken from St Patrick’s Institution to the Mater hospital on May 31st, 2006, Dublin City Coroner’s Court heard.

A postmortem by State Pathologist Prof Marie Cassidy found he had died of strychnine poisoning.

Mr Kelly was seen picking up tablets in the yard by two prisoners earlier that evening and putting them in his mouth.
