Madrid - A group of right-wing soldiers and a shipbuilder intended to kill Spain's king, queen and prime minister in 1985, but gave up the idea when they thought their plot was discovered by the Spanish secret service, the El Pais newspaper reported yesterday.

According to the paper, three army officers planned to plant a 100kg bomb in a tunnel under stands where King Juan Carlos, Queen Sofia and the then prime minister, Mr Felipe Gonzalez, would be watching a military parade in La Coruna, in the northwest, on June 2nd, 1985. They planned to blame the killings on the ETA Basque separatist organisation.
