MICHAEL Smurfit entertained the lemon V-neck brigade (or golfers, depending on your sporting tastes) at an overwhelmingly male dinner at his plush K Club on Wednesday evening after the Smurfit European Open Pro-Am Golf Tournament. During the day, the draw for teams turned out rather well for some. Michael Smurfit got to play with British Open Champion Tom Lehman, Tony Smurfit with Paul McGinley and Michael Smurfit Jnr with Bernhard Langer.

But the real winners were Padraig Harrington and his team, which included the very sociable Renault man Bill Cullen. The dinner itself was fairly low key with a ballad group providing the entertainment and several people remarked that Dr Smurfit was in particularly good humour despite an average day on the fairways.
