Pique over English remark

Paris - A French-language defence group attacked the Education Minister, Mr Claude Allegre, yesterday over his remark that learning English is becoming as basic a necessity as reading and writing in the France of today. Defense de la langue francaise demanded a clarification from the Socialist minister over the comments, saying it would take "more vigorous action" if it was not satisfied.
