Former Chilean dictator General Augusto Pinochet was discharged from hospital in Chile today after treatment for a stroke.

Mr Pinochet (89), was hospitalized last Saturday. He has diabetes and heart problems and suffers frequent strokes.

The Chilean Supreme Court was expected to rule today on whether murder and kidnapping charges against Mr Pinochet should proceed. The ruling is now expected either tomorrow or next week.

Human rights lawyers had criticized Mr Pinochet's hospitalization, saying it was part of his defence strategy.

Dozens of human rights cases against Mr Pinochet are working their way through the Chilean court system.

He was most recently charged with crimes in a case known as Operation Condor  - an effort by South American military leaders to repress political opposition  - and the pending Supreme Court decision could block that case or allow it to move forward.
