Dublin Corporation is running pilot projects to recover nitrogen and phosphorous from sewage at Ringsend, Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council was told last night.

Under the Dublin Bay Project, an EU supported initiative aimed at cleaning up the bay, all sewage dumping at sea must end by 1998. At present Dublin Corporation dumps over 300,000 tonnes of treated sludge from south Dublin, the city, and Dun Laoghaire into the Irish sea. Sewage from north Dublin is discharged untreated 60 metres off Howth.
