The spread of blue ear pig disease from Northern Ireland to the Republic could cost pig producers £30 million in one year, Mr Liam Ryan, chairman of the IFA Pigs and Pigmeat Committee, said yesterday.

There had been 17 confirmed cases of the disease in the North up to last Monday and the importation of pigs and sows from the North for slaughter should be discontinued, he said.
