The Philippines' president today condemned a racially motivated attack on two Filipino couples in Northern Ireland and urged authorities there to investigate.

The Filipinos said they may leave Portadown, Co Armagh after a mob pelted their home.

"We condemn this attack not only because the victims are Filipinos but because we abhor all forms of racism, what with more than eight million Filipinos in foreign lands and thousands of foreigners residing in our country," President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo said in a statement in Manila.

The mob threw a rock through the couples' living-room window. Other objects, including clay flower planters, were smashed against their walls. Last week, windows in the home were shattered in a similar attack.

The two women in the house both work as nurses at Craigavon hospital. Ms Arroyo said the Department of Foreign Affairs would work with Northern Ireland authorities so other Filipinos there are protected.
