Two police officers escaped injury after a petrol bomb was thrown at their car in Northern Ireland during the early hours of this morning.

The patrol car was en route to an emergency call from a distressed woman in Co Antrim when the device was thrown from an alleyway close to a fast food restaurant, hitting the side of the car before igniting.

The incident happened on Church Road, Newtownabbey, at around 1.30am. The device was thrown by a man described as around 5ft 10in tall, dressed entirely in black with his face covered. The culprit ran away down the alley.

Police are keen to hear from anyone with information or who can identify the offender.
