This State's next European Commissioner should be directly elected by the people, Mr Joe O'Toole (Ind), said. Politics were at a very low ebb here at present. Significant steps could be taken to improve this state of affairs. Next year would see the establishment of a new European Union Commission, he added. Somebody who would be our most important European would be a member of it. But this office should not be held at the grace and favour of the Government of the day. It should be directly elected by the people.
