THE GYMNAST who captured the world's heart at the Montreal Olympics in 1276 married a fellow Olympian yesterday in a civil wedding. Nadia Comaneci, now 34, wed, Bart Conner, a US citizen, in Bucharest, the Romanian capital. Conner won a medal at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles. The couple will have a Christian Orthodox ceremony today.

Veteran actor Sir Dirk Bogarde makes a rare public appearance this weekend to celebrate one of Britain's most successful film series.

He will unveil a plaque commemorating the hugely popular Doctor films at Pinewood studios. Bogarde played Dr Simon Sparrow in four of the seven films. The actor and writer returned to Britain 10 years ago, shortly before the death of his manager and partner Tony Forwood.

Britain's Independent newspaper announced yesterday it had appointed Andrew Marr as its new editor.

Mr Marr (36), currently the Independent chief political columnist, will take up the post on May 15th.

He was part of the original launch team in 1986 and has worked for the Economist and the Scotsman newspaper.

Michael Jackson has paid around $11 million (£7.3 million) for a "huge estate" in a choice area of the French countryside, his spokesman confirmed.

According to recent reports, the pop singer has been in the market for a French chateau close to one of his favourite destinations, Disneyland Paris, near the French capital. His spokesman said it "comes with all the facilities and amenities befitting the King of Pop".
