Pensioner Margaret “Greta” Lilly (96) is recovering at Letterkenny General Hospital in Co Donegal after being punched and gagged by attackers who broke into her home over the weekend. A “substantial” sum of money was taken, according to sources.

At least one man broke into her home at Aghilly, Buncrana, in the early hours of Saturday. He punched Ms Lilly in the ribs before escaping with her handbag.

The pensioner, who lives alone, managed to raise the alarm by pressing a 24-hour panic alarm.

Sources last night said the thugs got away with a “four-figure sum” .

Ms Lilly remained in hospital yesterday where she is described as in “good form” but “shook-up.” Her injuries are not understood to be serious.

She does not have relatives living locally in Co Donegal but receives daily home help visits from the HSE.

A Garda spokesman yesterday appealed for witnesses who may have noticed anybody near Ms Lilly’s house on Friday evening or early Saturday morning to contact them.

It is understood the men spoke with local accents and wore dark clothing but no other descriptions have been released.
