A MEMBER of Fingal County Council, Ms Sheila Terry (46), has been nominated by the Progressive Democrats to contest the Dublin West by election.

A remedial teacher specialising in the education of children of traveller families, she was the only candidate at the election convention in Leixlip, Co Dublin, yesterday.

Ms Terry won a seat on Dublin County Council on her first electoral outing in 1991. Married with four sons, she was born in Cork and has lived in Dublin for the past 26 years.

The leader of the PDs, Ms Mary Harney, said crime would be the number one issue in the by election and it deserved urgent and immediate attention. The first duty of the State was to protect its citizens and the Government was failing to do so.

Ms Harney said her party was committed to reducing tax on PAYE workers without any cuts in the overall level of public spending.
