Three British people are feared to have died after a fire in an apartment block in Paris.

The victims - a woman and her two daughters - are thought to have been staying on the fifth floor of the 300-year-old block when it was engulfed by flames early on Saturday morning.

About 180 firefighters tackled the blaze, which hurt several other people and destroyed the top two floors of the building near Les Halles in the centre of the city.

The fire started at around 2am on Saturday and took firefighters, two of whom were injured, several hours to bring under control.

It is believed the blaze started towards the bottom of the building before spreading to a stairwell and then the roof, which had wooden beams.
