Mr David Trimble is to bring proposals before his party executive on Friday which could weaken the Orange Order within the party.

It is understood the proposals would end the power of the order, the Young Unionists and other outside bodies to nominate up to 100 members of the Ulster Unionist Council, the UUP's governing body. Unionist sources last night said Mr Trimble believed the changes would help modernise the party.
