An opinion poll to be published tomorrow shows modest gains for the Government parties and Fine Gael and a 2 per cent fall in support for Labour.

According to the Lansdowne Market Research poll for the Irish Examiner,Fianna Fáil support is at 39 per cent, Fine Gael at 24 per cent, the PDs at 6 per cent and Labour down to 10 per cent.

Sinn Féin support has fallen one point to 9 per cent with Greens and Independents unchanged at 6 per cent.

Government approval is also up compared with the last poll for that paper, to 45 per cent, a rise of 8 points.

Forty per cent of those polled said the appointment of Michael McDowell as PD leader was a positive development. Thirty per cent disapproved.
