When was the last time you had a meal that left you so satisfied that you immediately wanted to share with the world, not to mention book your next visit?

Mine was at Oliviera, a tiny one-room restaurant in Nice, France, where I ate the exquisitely delicious “avocat loco”, a divine combination of avocado, coriander, garlic, lemon juice, fresh tomatoes and, of course, olive oil. Oliviera describes itself as representing “the anti-tourism of olive oil”; it sells neither soap nor facial scrub, only the oil itself, which is decanted from barrels in front of your very eyes.

The bad news for me is that geography means I won't be making it my regular Friday-night eatery; but the good news for us all is that Oliviera sells its oils from its website, where you can also find a variety of its recipes (including the avocat loco). The oils cost around €25 for 705ml and shipping is a further €18.50 (but for that you can ship up to six bottles). So this is not a cheap option, but if you buy in bulk, these oils would make great Christmas presents. The newest batch – of 16 oils – is due in November. oliviera.com
