LAGOS - Thirty five would be candidates from the volatile Ogoni oil producing area have been disqualified from contesting Nigeria's local council elections, the Vanguard newspaper reported yesterday.

It said they were suspected of belonging to the Movement for the Survival of Ogoni Peoples (MOSOP), nine of whose members were hanged last November for murder in defiance of world opinion.
