US president Barack Obama cut short his visit to the Republic and departed from Dublin airport tonight.

The early departure came amid fears that an ash cloud from the erupting volcano in Iceland may force the closure of Irish air space and effectively trap him here.

He was scheduled to depart tomorrow morning.

Mr Obama left Dublin airport on Air Force One at 9.28pm for the UK, where he was due tomorrow morning as part of his four-day European tour.
