Nurses caring for the elderly have called off their threat of industrial action.

Members of SIPTU's nursing section have agreed to accept new allowances worth around €1,700 from the Health Service Employers Agency (HSEA).

The location and qualification allowance was accepted after the HSEA agreed to extend the allowance paid to nurses in psychiatric and learning disability units to those working in psycho-geriatric wards.

Mr Oliver McDonagh of SIPTU said: "We are now satisfied that the issue has been resolved to our satisfaction and look forward to an early implementation of the recommendation."

The dispute dates back to 1999.
