The Central Applications Office said yesterday it had received notification of the upgrades from the Department of Education, and college applicants did not have to send them on.

The CAO said "any offer to which an applicant may be entitled" would be posted next Monday to arrive the next day.

The college will then consider whether there is room on the course for the applicant and, if so, they can start immediately. The CAO said if a course was full a college would guarantee the applicant's entry next year.

However, the Department of Education said in the event of any problem it would liaise with the college concerned to ensure a candidate would get a place this year.
