Longyearbyen, Norway - Twenty-three Russian and Ukrainian coalminers were killed yesterday when an explosion ripped through a mineshaft in Barentsburg, in the Spitzbergen achipelago of Arctic Norway.

There were 34 survivors among the miners who were in the shaft when the explosion occurred, said regional officials who provided the death toll. The mine is operated by a Russian firm.
