Oslo - The Norwegian Prime Minister, Mr Kjell Magne Bondevik, announced the resignation yesterday of his government after losing a vote of confidence in parliament.

Mr Bondevik, who came to office in late 1997, had told parliament that he would "accept the consequences" and stand down if his government was overruled in the vote.
