The PSNI has reported that residents of Northern Ireland are experiencing difficulties gaining access to emergency 999 helplines.

The backlog of 999 calls is due, they said, to the flooding and extreme weather conditions being experienced across Britain.

Citizens are being urged by the ambulance, police, coastguard and fire services to hold on the line and wait for 999 calls to be answered.

An alternative emergency services phone number has also been provided for Northern Irish residents on 9090 1278.
