NORTHERN Ireland is to have a new Lord Chief Justice

NORTHERN Ireland is to have a new Lord Chief Justice. Sir Brian Hutton, who is being elevated to the House of Lords, is being replaced by Lord Justice Robert Carswell.

Lord Justice Carswell (62), a colleague of Sir Brian on the Northern Ireland High Court, will be sworn in as Lord Chief Justice on January 6th.

Lord Justice Carswell was appointed a Lord Justice of Appeal in Northern Ireland in 1993 and a High Court judge in 1984. He was called to the Bar of Northern Ireland in 1957 and took silk in 1971. He was called to the English Bar the following year. He was educated at the Royal Belfast Academical Institution and Pembroke College, Oxford.
