The High Court in Belfast has started hearing a case in which a senior civil servant is claiming he was victimised because he lifted the lid on mismanagement at the cross-Border body, Waterways Ireland.

Brian McTeggart (54), Enniskillen, Co Fermanagh, claimed he was subjected to seven years of bullying and harassment by Waterways Ireland and within the North’s Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure.

Mr McTeggart is seeking damages against both bodies for an alleged campaign which he said caused his health to suffer and “blighted” his career. He has already received £50,000 in a settlement reached at an industrial tribunal without any admission of liability.
