MELBOURNE - Nine mentally handicapped men died as a fire ripped through a special accommodation centre early today. The roof of the complex collapsed at the height of the midnight blaze, burying some of the victims, but firefighters managed to pull two badly injured men clear.

A police spokesman said investigators would examine the scene, but it was too early to speculate on the cause of the fire.
