Chamonix - Eight climbers died on Mont Blanc, Europe's highest mountain, after slipping on ice, and another climber fell to his death nearby, mountain rescue police said yesterday.

They first found the bodies of five people who fell off the mountain on one of the two classic routes up the 4,807 metre peak, and then the bodies of three others. Another man died when he fell climbing the southern face of the Meije, to the south of Mont Blanc.
