Chinese oil workers have been kidnapped in South Kordofan state, an energy-rich region of Sudan, a Chinese embassy official said today.

The workers were seized by unknown kidnappers around lunchtime yesterday, said spokesman Raymond Yu.

It is the third time within the last year that oil workers have been kidnapped in the region, the source of a large part of Sudan's oil wealth.

The spokesman earlier said the workers were kidnapped in North Kordofan state.
