Nine people were charged today follow attacks on police during violence in Derry in the early hours yesterday morning.

Arrests were made after one office suffered a head injury when struck by a bottle when a gang of up to 40 hurled missiles at police in the city's Shipquay Street.

Eight of those arrested were charged in connection with the attack - charges included assault on police and disorderly behaviour.

They were bailed by police to appear at Derry Magistrates Court on January 8th.

The ninth person was charged over the assault of a who suffered head injuries in an attack an hour after the attack on police.
