Limerick Harbour Commissioners are to install a new radar system to assist navigation on the Shannon Estuary

Limerick Harbour Commissioners are to install a new radar system to assist navigation on the Shannon Estuary. The project has attracted £510,000 from the EU's Cohesion Fund, according to the chairman of the Commissioners, Mr Clem Casey.

The radar system has no connection with the satellite navigation system planned for Loop Head.

Mr Jim Whyte, deputy harbour master, said a record 1,499,248 tonnes of shipping entered the port for the two month period up to the end of August.
