A boil water notice has been issued to an estimated 15,000 house-holders in Galway city in the second major water contamination crisis to hit the city this year.

According to the notice issued to residents in the Knocknacarra area, the contamination concerns E-Coli and not the cryptosporidium bug that forced some 90,000 households in the city to boil water for four months this summer.

Residents in the affected areas have been instructed to boil all tap water before drinking or use in food preparation.
