A new framework for early learning was published by the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment today.

Aistear – which provides guidance for teaching children from birth to six years of age – was developed following extensive research, consultation, planning, and development by the NCCA in partnership with the early childhood sector

The programme gives practical information, ideas and suggestions to help adults provide experiences that motivate and challenge children in ways that spark their imaginations. It can be used by childminders, daycare professionals, parents and teachers in infant classes in primary schools.

It highlights the critical role of play, relationships and language for young children’s learning.

Minister for Education Batt O’Keeffe said the framework would help children grow up “with a strong sense of well-being” and pride in themselves, their families and their communities.
