A new childcare centre aimed at providing support for people involved in the care, education and welfare of children was opened today in Dungarvan Co Waterford.

The centre will host the Dungarvan Family Support project run by Barnardos and the Waterford County Childcare Committee (WCCC).

Speaking at the opening the Ombudsman for Children, Emily Logan, said the centre was a "critical resource" for the local community.

"A centre such as this will play an important role in helping all children and especially the most vulnerable children and young people in County Waterford to reach their potential," Ms Logan said.

Maire Ui Bhroinn of the WCCC said the centre would be a "place of welcome and support" for all those involved in the welfare of children.

"The children of County Waterford are entitled to the best possible care and educational opportunities to help fulfil their true potential," she added.
