Dr Catherine O'Brien, professor of Italian at University College Galway, has been appointed chairwoman of the National Council of Curriculum and Assessment (NCCA).
Dr O'Brien, originally from Limerick, has also lectured in Italian at University College Cork and has been involved in the promotion of Italian in the west of Ireland.
