Sports columnists, crime reporters and headline writers will be in line for recognition as part of this year’s National Newspapers of Ireland Journalism Awards.

The three new categories have been added to 13 others, which include awards for sports, political and business writers as well as scoop of the year and best design and presentation.

Last year the inaugural competition attracted 550 entries. Organisers have enrolled additional judges this year for an anticipated increase in applications.

Announcing details, NNI chairman Matt Dempsey said last year’s awards were a great success and “a resounding affirmation of the fact that newspapers invest more in content than any other medium”.

The entries had also “underlined the amazing diversity in journalism today”.
