NATO should start examining a possible role in supporting a future agreement to end the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, alliance chief Mr Jaap de Hoop Scheffer said tpday.

"We should not shy away from starting to think about a potential role for NATO in supporting a Middle East peace agreement," Mr de Hoop Scheffer told a defence and security conference in the German city of Munich.

He said any role would be conditional on there being a peace accord in place, and on the acceptance of both sides for NATO to be involved. He added it may also require a UN mandate.
